Drive with confidence in the Cayman Islands
Written by Andys Rent-A-Car
Driving in the Cayman Islands is almost similar to most other countries with some slight exceptions. A driver with a few years of experience would be able to drive around quite easily. With the use of features such as the GPS, driving has been made easier. The general driving information below might increase your confidence when hitting the roads in the Cayman.
Since the Cayman Islands are part of the British overseas territory, driving is on the left side of the road. Cayman Islands car rental customers would need to keep on the left. When driving a car with passengers in the back, the law requires that all the passengers should be wearing their seat belts for their own safety. At a red light, a vehicle should stop fully. However, if the vehicle has to go to the left, it can do so even when the light is red and even after having stopped fully.
Like in most countries, the use of a mobile phone while driving is illegal. However, hands-free systems are acceptable. When a car reaches a four-way stop, priority would need to be given to the car that go to the stop first. The car which had been there first would need to proceed first. The speed limit on the islands varies from 25 mph to 50 mph. The law is quite strict about speeding and people who speed might quickly collect tickets. Moreover, pedestrians needs to be given priority when they are on pedestrian crossings.
